Chapter Fifty-Six

Unlike Kendra Derry, where it was discussed and decided that calling ahead would only tip their hand, destroying any chance they had of speaking with her, the choice was made to phone before heading over to The Levitan Group. A decision steeped in knowing both how law firms accounted for their time, and the way that showing up unannounced would be received.

A drive-by that was just as likely to have security called on them as to let them actually sit down with anybody of meaning.

Knowing that any help they were going to receive from Derry was likely exhausted, after thanking her for her time and making their exit, Erika Wernick and Craig Cobb had spent a few minutes perusing the firm’s website. A quick scan to determine who might be around that may have known or worked with Doug. Somebody who could speak to the caseload he was taking on or if he’d had any heated interactions with clients or opponents.

A continuation of what Cobb had mentioned the night before, about treating Levitan as a regular victim. A case like any other, pretending they didn’t know what happened in the minutes immediately after Levitan’s life ended.

Hoping to merely find a ranking partner who had been with the firm a long time and might have regularly interacted with Levitan, they found something even better.

A man who shared his last name.

Sitting along the side of the street just three blocks from Derry’s house, Erika had called the direct line for Marshall Levitan. Answered by a receptionist doubling as a gatekeeper, she had done her best to stave off any requests to meet.

Dogged resolve that withstood Erika’s best tap dancing, ultimately ending with telling yet another close approximation of the truth. A massaged version of things tailored to whoever they were in front of.

A thin line between subterfuge and getting at the heart of a story that Erika was first taught how to navigate in journalism school more than a decade before.

Arguably, one of the best things she learned there.

Certainly, the most enduring.

In this case, it was decided to namedrop the departed relative and a story of how they’d been tasked with taking a second look at what happened. A story without mention of who might have requested their efforts that was too much for the woman to stave off.

No matter how much it was clear she wanted to.

Begrudgingly afforded fifteen minutes later in the afternoon, Erika and Cobb were left with a couple of hours to kill. Time enough for them to head south from Pasadena into West Covina, where the practice was located.

An initial pass to make sure they knew where to find it before heading off to get lunch. A search for food that ended fifteen minutes later at a nearby Cracker Barrel, neither having said much during the journey. Same for the time spent waiting for a table, both keeping their thoughts to themselves until after the waitress had taken their orders and returned with drinks before beginning to unpack what was learned at Derry’s.
